Two vie in only contested Georgetown council election
Incumbent faces challenge by a Dell project manager.

GEORGETOWN — District 1 incumbent Patty Eason faces Dell Inc. project manager Ric Spencer in the only contested Georgetown council election May 9. District 1 includes the southeastern portion of the city, including Old Town.

Spencer, 49, has lived in the city for two years. According to city records, he has never served on a board or commission for the city. He has declined repeated requests for interviews.

Eason, 58, has served two three-year terms. She is a longtime civic leader with more than 20 years of experience volunteering with local nonprofit groups and serving on city boards, including the planning and zoning commission and the board of adjustments. She has also served on the Brazos River Authority board.

"I bring to the City Council experience and history," Eason said.

She said transportation is one of the top issues that Georgetown faces. Eason serves on the board of the Austin-San Antonio Intermunicipal Commuter Rail District, which is proposing a 112-mile rail line from Georgetown to San Antonio.

She said transportation, including rail and an intracity bus system, should be approached in a comprehensive way. In February, the city completed a pilot bus run that went from downtown to the Sun City Texas community, but because the route was so limited, the council directed city staff to further study the best ways to bring a bus system to the city.

Eason is also spearheading the census count for the city and recently invited a representative of the Dallas Regional Census Center to talk to the city about ways to work with others. She said the census is the most important venture she is working on now because it affects state and federal funding for roads, bridges and hospitals.

Across town, incumbent Pat Berryman is running unopposed for the District 5 council seat.
